Origins Santa Barbara was one of those beans that needed an incredibly fine grind to get to espresso pulling territory. Grind setting 3.2 was the cusp of choking with an extraction taking about 35 seconds for a double espresso. But once I had nailed the settings and had that first sip, it made me simply go “Oh!” in surprise. It has this fruitier acidity in an espresso and when I mixed it with milk, this acidity can get wiped out easily which is both a good and a bad thing – good because the acidity is a bit intense but bad because alongside that sourness, other flavours get muted. I opted to have this as a rather short drink, sitting in the flat white/cortado territory with total volumes between 120 – 180mL. Longer lattes simply overpowered this very delicate coffee and did it no favours.
As the website stated an espresso recipe but the marketing emails shared a filter recipe for this coffee – I decided to try both. I brewed this coffee with V60 one sunny day. I was having a slow and casual coffee morning with a friend and it was a very different experience. The nuttiness shone through alongside the fruity curranty flavours. It was very easy to drink and enjoy black.

Initially, this was a contender for the ‘The Bag You Know’ but it didn’t pack enough punch for a latte (my preferred morning coffee drink). I will be going back to the drawing board and leaving Origin Coffee roaster for a little while to explore other roasters. The hunt continues to find my lovely little regular bag for my cupboards and as per usual, I’ll be documenting and sharing that journey with you.
