Under Pressure: Does Your Bean-to-Cup Machine Really Use 19 Bars?

It has become common knowledge in my circle of friends  that I am a little bit of a coffee nerd – especially after I gave away my old machine when it was time for an upgrade. One random day, a friend asked me about my knowledge of bean-to-cup coffee machines as they were in the market to get one. I was honest in saying that I didn’t know much about them as I had never looked at one, but I was happy to investigate and throw my two-pence into their quest.

At the press of a button, these machines will grind, brew and serve you your coffee. They will use ideal grind sizes and maintain optimal temperatures throughout the process. They provide users with the pleasure of drinking fresh espresso based coffee drinks with the convenience of minimal human labour. These machines are perfectly designed for the busy coffee enthusiast who want to enjoy a flavourful coffee at home.

My friend shared that a Sage sales representative had stated that they ‘shouldn’t bother with a bean-to-cup machine as they may as well be having instant coffee.’ Firstly, that person had a conflict of interest and may have been trying to up-sell a more expensive manual product and secondly, I’m not a huge fan of gate keeping in coffee. I despise pushing the idea that there is only one way of doing coffee right and this comment reeked of that mentality. If you aren’t interested in manual coffee making, you will never get a manual machine.

I won’t continue to berate this seller because the same person did share a useful tidbit which was a great starting point of my research. They stated that most bean-to-cup machines do not have good enough pressure to extract good coffee. So I decided to check this against a list of the Best Bean-to-Cup Machines in 2026 (in the UK at the time of writing). The results were interesting

The majority of these machines sat at 15 or 19 bars of pressure which is considered to be too high in espresso making textbooks. Pressure is important because this is what forces water through your coffee grounds. That water extracts all our oils and aromatic compounds and creates our flavourful shot. If your pressure is too high – you risk pushing the water through your coffee too quickly and getting a bitter drink. 9 bars is considered industry standard and has been the standard since the 20th century. It’s widely accepted as the ideal pressure because it allows for a more balanced espresso full of flavour and body without over-extracting and pulling out bitter notes.

An interesting trend with some of at home machines marketed at 15 or 19 bars is they won’t actually pull that pressure through your coffee. The pump has the capability to run that high but it will be capped to run at 9 bars at the point of extraction.

Cost of parts

The only machine that had 9 bars of pressure out of the box the had a recommended retail price of £1699.95 (about $2,250 USD) at the time of writing. The others, sat between £235 and £700 RRP. This brings me to my second point – cost of parts.

When looking at a multi functional tool such as a bean-to-cup machine, if manufacturer is aiming to sell their product at a certain price pointe – they have to spread their money across more parts to fulfill different functions. Rather than £200 paying for parts focusing only on espresso extraction, that £200 needs to pay for grinder parts, extraction parts and electronics that allow all of these components to work in harmony. The risk is, you may get ‘cheaper’ parts in a multi functional machine vs a single functional tool at the same price point.

With that being said, the general adjustment is that to get a decent machine that does all of these things well, you will most likely need to spend a bit more compared to a more simple manual machine of the same caliber.

My final recommendation

My friend had narrowed their search to a machine the met their needs of full automation. The machine had multiple drink modes and an auto-frother. They wanted their first 6 am coffee to be easy, quick and with minimal fuss. I took a deep dive into the specs and noticed it had 15 bars of pressure listed on its technical information. I called the manufacturer and they clarified that the maximum pressure of the machine was indeed 15 bars but it used 9 bars for the espresso element. I shared my findings with my friend and encouraged them to watch YouTube videos on the product to ensure they wanted to invest in this machine.

The ultimate thing I learnt throughout this was the importance of reframing judgement. I despise gate-keeping and snobbery and sometimes this coffee enthusiast space is full of it. Whether a machine is pushing 9 bars or 19, it’s easy to feel under pressure to take textbook metrics as gospel. The most important thing is if your are enjoying the cup of coffee in your hands. High-end specs and industry standards are great benchmarks, but they shouldn’t be used as barriers to entry. By stepping outside my own workflow bias, I didn’t just help a friend find a machine; I reminded myself that the best brew is the one that fits your life, your budget, and your taste. So, do the research, ask the experts, but never let the “rules” of coffee extraction bitter your love for the craft.
