Coffee Again, Carefully: My Return Through Cold Brew Concetrates

MY FAVOURITE RECIPE
Coffee: QUARTERPAST Caramel Iced Coffee
Milk: RUDE Health Almond Barista
Extra Details: Cold milk, lots of ice and sipped through a straw.

I was encouraged to try cold brew by a friend who opts for this brewing method due the cold water extraction method producing good quality low acidity coffees. They have severe acid reflux due to a medical condition and initially I thought my friend brewed their cold brew at home. However, they shared that they purchased concentrates from the store. I decided to do the same for ease as well as avoiding committing too much time and resource into a new method of coffee I may not like.

Admittedly, I was a skeptic of cold brew concentrates, largely afraid of the additives that make shelf-stable bottles have a chance of making it to the consumer in a decent state. After some research and walking around various supermarkets, I landed on QUARTERPAST Caramel Iced Coffee concentrate and bought it home with me.

Ingredients include : Glucose, cane sugar, filtered water, coffee powder, flavour, citric acid, natural colour and preservative.

Mixed with almond milk (a more alkaline milk than other plant based milks), this iced caramel latte was delicious. It reminded me of the canned or bottled premixed coffees available in supermarkets. Admittedly, I’m a fan of these drinks on a warm Summer day. It scratched the itch that came from not drinking coffee for the last six weeks. It also came at the perfect time of year, when the days were getting longer, brighter and a lot warmer. An iced coffee would bring both the flavour and cooling effect I craved as the world around me tipped from gentle warm Spring into a bolder Summertime.

I don’t know if the concentrates would replace making my own cold-brew at home but it’s nice knowing there are shop-bought options that are enjoyable and convenient.

Next time I’ll be trying a cold-brew concentrate without any flavouring so I can try it black. However, until then, continue enjoying your cups of coffee, however you brew (or buy) them.

Until our next drink,
